At Home with Karen Abell of Patina Collection

A wander through Patina Collection in downtown Naples may have you wishing you could bring the whole store home with you. (It does for us!) Owner and curator Karen Abell’s vision for Patina Collection ensued after countless trips to Europe, visiting the grand flea markets in Paris, the weekend markets in Provence, and the Amalfi Coast. The result? A timeless assemblage of current and one-of-a-kind vintage pieces, from artisanal ceramics to cultivated heirlooms.

Of course, we were curious how Karen’s sophisticated style translates to her home. Here, she shares how she incorporates Patina’s signature “je ne sais quoi” into five of her own spaces.

First Impressions

Make your entry reflect who you are and what you want your guests to feel the minute they enter your house. Here, I have a mix of my favorite Italian chest and mirror with pieces from my coral collection, vintage rattan chairs and more fresh cuttings from around the house.

Think Outside the Box

If you’re an entertainer, having a unique bar is always fun to put together. I save all my vintage and beautiful liquor bottles and crystal decanters and mix it with part of my coral collection.

Bedroom Details

Even in my personal space, I like to highlight some of my favorites. Again, you see pieces from my coral collections, cuttings from the landscape around my house, my favorite books and vintage shell boxes.

Artistic Treatments

A great way to add softness and color is a custom wall mural. Here, I partnered with my friend Shiree Ingram (@shireenicholedesignerfinishes). I wanted to achieve an Old Florida vista that reflected the lifestyle of our home, being so close to our beautiful Naples beaches. Together, we created this fabulous mural in one of my favorite rooms, our formal dining room.

Just the Right Mix

It’s important to mix family treasures with natural coral, frames and anything you find fun that may not fit the traditional display. Get creative and let it reflect who you are.
